Mentzendorff Kümmel was born out of the creativity of a Dutch aristocrat, the Baron Von Blanckenhagen, and the talents of a young entrepreneur called Ludwig Mentzendorff (b.1823–d.1901). Originally distilled in the remote village of Allash near the Latvian Port of Riga, it quietly grew to such popularity that Ludwig decided to export it to the United Kingdom under the Mentzendorff name in 1850. On June 1st of that same year Ludwig sailed from Hamburg to London on the SS Caledonia. In 1851 he began selling Mentzendorff Kümmel and in 1853 opened an office in the City of London. On 1st October 1857 he wrote in High German to Jacques Bollinger offering to be his Agent für England. On 9th January 1858 Jacques replied, accepting the offer, by 1864 Ludwig held seven agencies, Bollinger being the most prestigious, which continues to this day with the Bollinger Family remaining M&Co. majority shareholder. Ludwig, a charismatic and energetic man, never completely retired until his death, aged 78.
