Delegate Profile

Mackenzie Paton

Company NameAta Rangi

Mackenzie Paton is part of the Ata Rangi clan, growing up on the vineyard and stubbornly ignoring the possibility of ever working in wine. Always fascinated with stories and craftsmanship, she studied History and Art History before acknowledging the parallels with the wine world and realising the value of her own family history. She returned to Ata Rangi in 2017, where she worked in the cellar door and office, but was also found in the lab and at the sorting table during harvest, and in the vineyard whenever she got the chance. She holds a diploma in Wine Business and WSET Level 3, and is currently working on the Brand Management team at Liberty Wines in London.

Ata Rangi means ‘dawn sky’ or ‘new beginning,’ and is a small family winery with a serious reputation for Pinot Noir. Founded in 1980 by dairy-farmer-turned-winemaker Clive Paton, Ata Rangi is still owned and managed by Clive, his wife Phyll and sister Alison. Joined in 2003 by indomitable winemaker Helen Masters, Gourmet Traveller Wine’s 2019 New Zealand Winemaker of the Year, and with a skilled team in place, Ata Rangi has gone from strength to strength. In 2010, Ata Rangi was honoured with the inaugural Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa for their Pinot Noir, New Zealand’s equivalent of Grand Cru status.
