Speaker - Alessio Planeta
After completing his masters in agriculture, Alessio spent the best years of his youth studying the history of Sicily and its viticulture. He became a sort of wine-nerd spending his so-called holidays working in France, Piedmont, California, and Australia, rather than in Ibiza or Saint-Tropez.
Looking back, the reason was a growing doubt in his mind: how is it possible that with such a unique history, with such a choice of different terroirs, exciting soil situations and infinite number of local varieties, yet still Sicilian wines were not on the top of the wine world? The question needed an answer.
So with his family, he decided to get into the ring: the first round was the Chardonnay. It definitely went well, showing that their Sicily was secondary to nowhere. A bigger dream started to develop, the plan of a viticulture trip around the island.
Nowadays Francesca, Santi and Alessio are developing and leading a collection of six boutique wineries in five different territories, to save and show the heritage and the infinite biodiversity of the island in the vineyards and beyond.
The main focus nowadays is on the research and development of the local and reliquary varieties, in parallel with the development of tourism, with the help of culture, cuisine and art, and the participation in the foundation of the first regional program to develop sustainability in agriculture.
