Mastiha World: The Growers' Spirit
A special treat from Greece is returning to make an impressive appearance at Imbibe Live this year.
Enosis is a premium liqueur made from the natural resin of the Pistacia Lentiscus var Chia evergreen bush, which only grows in the southern part of Chios Island.
As the ‘ultimate Greek terroir’, mastiha has been an exclusive product for over 25 centuries and one of the best-kept Aegean secrets. The first mastiha cocktails were concocted by the Romans (such as Conditum Paradoxum containing mastiha, wine, egg, honey, pepper and bay leaves); Byzantine emperors made mastiha trade their monopoly and Ottoman sultans seized the first ‘Kentos’ (the purest and highest quality resin harvest) for their harems.
Today mastiha is a PDO product and thanks to the unique tradition still honoured by the local growers, it has been recognised as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. All mastiha products are authenticated (by law) by the Chios Mastiha Growers’ Association (or Union – “Enosis” in Greek), the worldwide authority in all things mastiha.
Now an Oxford-based startup is dedicated to bringing this Mediterranean jewel to the UK to build new and long-lasting trade collaborations. Mastiha World imports exclusively the two premium authentic mastiha liqueurs crafted locally in Chios by the Growers’ Association, signed and stamped as ‘The Growers’ Spirits’: the delicate Kentos and the superfine Enosis.
